Web Browser Updates:
This site uses technology supported by Netscape 4.x or later and Internet Explorer 3.02 or later. To enhance your internet experience at this site and others, we recommend you update your browser. Bookmark this page now and return later to download the updates.
Netscape Communications: version 4 or later
Microsoft Internet Explorer:
Version 3.2 supports most common javascript functions but is not fully compatible with the Javascript 1.1 specification. This will cause some features to work while others produce error messages. While error messages are annoying they should not cause any damage or crash your browser. They only indicate that there is more content available than your browser is able to access. Explorer 3.2 for Macintosh running system 8.x more fully implemented than 3.2 for Windows system, but still has some problems.
(To download earlier versions of Internet Explorer click on the download icon found in the right hand column of the Microsoft download Page.)
Javascript:
Javascript was developed by Sun Microsystems and the makers of Netscape to enhance the Netscape browser application with a programming language that could execute on a variety of computer operating systems without requiring programmers to write platform specific code, much the same as HTML. Javascript code is imbedded in the HTML code that describes a web page. To view or execute javascript requires you to have the Java Class Libraries installed on your local hard drive. The latest Class Libraries for Java are available for a variety of operating systems, and are included for Windows and Macintosh systems as integrated parts of the web browsers listed above.
What does this mean for you? As long as web programmers follow these protocols your web experience should be the same, or very similar, in any browser that supports Javascript.
Many sites on the internet, including the GETREAL-ESTATE.NET site, are using this technology to provide enhanced interaction with visitors and more will do so in the future. Javascript is less powerful than Java, but also provides a level of security to web surfers, in that, it can not write to or modify your local hard disk.
Updates to the class libraries for Java and Javascript should be obtained from the maker of your browser software, or those listed above.
Microsoft VBscript and Active Server Pages:
Microsoft VBscript is similar to Javascript in the way that it expands the interactive features available in web pages. The GETREAL site uses VBscript through the Gorge Networks, Inc., Internet Information System server, AccessDB.net server and Active Server Page functions. You will see this technology in use on database listings and on our search forms pages. The advantage of Active Server Pages is the ability to provide interactive content is dependent upon your browser. The script code is executed on the server and appropriate html code is returned to your browser.
Advantages and disadvantages of Javascript and Active Server Page Technology:
The main disadvantage of Active Server Page technology is that it places a burden upon the server and requires more round trip data transfers through the phone lines. Javascript code is executed locally on your computer which reduces transmission through phone lines. The disadvantage to this technology is that proper functionality depends upon the javascript engine in your browser, may require you to have more memory or a faster processor in your computer to truly enjoy the benefit. We use both javascript and Active Server Pages technology where their strengths outweigh their weaknesses. Sometimes we use both together.
Microsoft Truetype Web Fonts:
Many sites, this one included, use cascading style sheet technology. With cascading style sheets the code will attempt to draw the page using fonts which may be on your system. Microsoft has made a sample set of Web Fonts available at the locations below.
